Investing in a Menswear Wardrobe

You may have heard of investment pieces when talking about a wardrobe. An investment piece can mean a few things. For one, it can be a piece that appreciates in value, like a designer leather good that with age and rarity or exclusivity, can net a higher price on resale. For our purposes however, an investment piece is one that is classic and will last you for many uses over the years. This week's Menswear Monday is all about investments in quality vs. investments in quantity, guiding you on how to splurge on classic vs. trendy clothes and accessories. The right investments can offer you countless outfits to rotate throughout your weekly grind.

I'm all about a pop of color in my everyday look, so for this week's Menswear Monday, I chose to highlight crimson when styling my boyfriend. This is a great look for work or work functions, date nights or parties, especially when you're looking to make a good impression, either with the boss or your date. It's also a look that is easy to put together and recreate with the help of a few staple pieces. It's affordable too.

A classic, black blazer is a wardrobe staple worth investing in.

Every man should invest in a classic black blazer, which is a staple for both men and women. As I discussed in my last Altuzarra for Target post on finding my own perfect black blazer, a blazer can be individualized to your own particular style. For this look, we went with a cotton-polyester blend blazer from H&M with a white button detailing. What I love about this particular piece is it can be dressed up or down. The cotton-polyester blend keeps is casual when paired with a graphic tee. Another men's wardrobe staple includes a pair of black oxfords. Black oxfords, like these by Alfani, are a staple dress shoe that offers a more vintage feel than your standard dress shoe. Since you'll get a lot of use out of both these pieces, it's good to invest in top-notch quality. It's best to think of it like this: spend less on trendier pieces that may not be in style long; spend more on classic staples that you'll wear for years to come.

Once you have your staples set, it's all about having the right interchangeable clothes and accessories to create a variety of outfit options. While you're investing in a blazer and oxfords for quality, you can switch it up and invest in a variety of button-ups for quantity. Whether in solid colors, stripes, plaid or any other print, your button-up can really be the statement piece in your outfit. When styling this look for Fonzi, we started with this plaid Zara button-up, working the accessories around it. To accent the red in the plaid, we chose a pair of crimson chinos from PacSun. Pants are also great to invest in for quantity. Chinos can be dressed both up and down and they come in a variety of colors and fabrics. PacSun offers many options, all affordable at around $59 and usually on a BOGO deal.

Bow ties, ties and watches are key accessories in a man's wardrobe, so investing in a collection of each can really amp your style game up. Bow ties and ties are about preference, but if you haven't yet tried a bow tie, it's a great way to have a little fun with your style. Invest in your ties and bow ties for a variety of colors and prints. Accessories can make or break an outfit and can easily change up your style. A watch is another key accessory that can do this. For this look, we chose a classic black Fossil watch with a pearly white face and umbrella-like cutout with a sun and moon illustrated plate that rotates as time passes. It's a fun detail that also accents the red throughout the outfit. Having a collection of watches to rotate is great, but this is a piece you can invest in for quality.

To recap, invest in a black blazer, oxfords and watches for quality. You can pair these with a variety of button-ups, chinos, and ties. These collections can be an investment in quantity. By making the right investments in your wardrobe, you'll have countless ways to mix and match each day without emptying your savings.
